Hello drill lovers worldwide,

Just when all hope seems lost, the drills out perform themselves once again to lift our spirits!

Yup, Thursday night, Kikelomo successfully delivered TWINS in the Group 1 enclosure at Afi.  Rainstorm and winds were apparently not a deterrent!

Mother and babies doing fine as of Friday morning.  Both twins are suckling simultaneously and appear to be the same size.  Sex has yet to be determined and gestation must be re-confirmed but provisionally is about 10 days early.

Kikelomo #109 is a first generation, captive-born at Drill Ranch in November 1995.  She had her first offspring (Keri #204) on 17 June 2000 - she did not conceive in 2001; it is typical for very young mothers to skip a year after their first offspring is born.  Wild born Odey #027 is almost certainly father of the twins.  Wild born Kekere #026 and Billy O'Ban #003 are the parents of Kikelomo.

Does anyone know of twin births, successful or otherwise, for Mandrillus??  We're interested now!

will keep you posted,

The twins are doing fine, they will be a week old tomorrow! I can't believe it. They're both boys and may turn out to be identical. Their names are Kehinde and Taiwo. These are the traditional Yoruba names for twins. Even though we are far from Yoruba-land, and drills are not endemic there, one of our original females arrived with a Yoruba name: Kekere. So all her kids have Yoruba names, and her first daughter is Kikelomo, the mother of the
twins. Okay, so that's the name story!

Pandrillus History and News
Pandrillus  Ranch News
Pandrillus Breeding Center permit the Drills to wander among the forest islands. The grown-up foundlings live in an area of about 5 acres. Life there is almost similar to what they would encounter in the wild. Pandrillus is protecting them from their former enemies, the hunters, who, at present, earn their living as caretakers and tourist guides. This is a good way of helping man and animals alike.

Pandrillus is approaching 100 Drill births in the past six years. The Drill Ranch is located in Nigeria along the Afi river.

Liza  Gadsgy and Peter Jenkens are leading the way in their field due to allot of very hard work. The unconditional love they share for Drills has always been first in their lives and they are constantly sacrificing personally for their Drills.

This from Animal Planet/Discovery:

On behalf of all at Pandrillus, we'd like to apologize for the terribly depressing name of the program. Rest assured we lobbied hard to have it changed to no avail! We hope you enjoy it!

"The Orphans of the Fading Forest site is live at animalplanet.com.
"Thanks to all who helped by providing materials, time and expert knowledge to
make the site possible, especially Liza Gadsby, Peter Jenkins and Zena Tooze for their amazing conservation work."oduce
